When online electioneering goes too far

With the billions that he’s putting into his presidential campaign, Senator Manuel Bamba Villar Jr. might as well buy the entire Internet. He’s on Google AdSense, he’s on Twitter, he’s even on facebook, suggesting that you become his fan or friend or both.

He’s everywhere now, and he might just take it a little too far.

Magpatala! Lahat naglalaro!

Trade fruits, vegetables, horses, allegiances, and pogi points with your friends!

Be the first to build your FarmVillar villa, then gobble up your neighbors land!

Yeehaw!

(UPDATE: I guess great minds think alike. PlayPinas kicks it up a notch with their take on FarmVillar)

  1. I think, what Villar is doing is better than what Noynoy’s online group is doing. At least he’s paying his ads to get famous. For me, it’s Noynoy’s camp that has gone too far; they have resorted to cyberharassment/cyberbullying. They even delete comments and members that disagrees with their views. What kind of censorship is that? He’s not even president, huh! And what’s ironic is that he’s the one who always talks about democracy, the legacy which his mother and father fought for etc. etc etc. Wth!

  5. I can see where you’re coming from Benedicto Graciano. Actually, I think he is just being true to his word that he will continue his parents’ legacy. That was what her mother did during her term. They feel as if they are of supreme moral pedigree hiding behind the “skirts” of clergymen.

    Let’s take a fresh case: Noynoy’s recent statement that if elected, he will not honor Arroyo’s appointed SC Justice. Very much like his mother when her government despised anything “Marcosian” even if the projects were heavily beneficial to our country (Bataan Nuclear power plant, expansive road network, scheduled transport systems and so on..)

    Anyway, I am not a Villar fan but that image is very funny. And yes he’s really into buying everything from real estate to the Internet to intergrity. And I believe there is a pending case of some sort in the Senate related to the C-5 expansion controversy he’s in. If it goes into full bloom, I think it will be devastating for his image.

    The good thing I see around him though is his beautiful daughter. Hehehe.

  6. I really want to give credit to whoever made that photo because I’m so going to repost it a lot of times.

    The thing that sucks about the elections in our country is that whoever wins, we lose. The politics that the powers-that-be(/itch) have made has been effed up beyond all recognition. Those with the brains rarely have the brass balls… and vise versa (except Miriam… she has a loose screw, by the way.) And if anyone has both, they probably don’t have the popularity or face value that can convince a large fraction of the voters to vote for them.

  7. @Dicklip: The ethics investigation at the Senate seems to have been pretty much forgotten. His image didn’t really suffer that much, though.

    Also, you have a valid point re: Marcos projects being scrapped just because Marcos thought them up.

  8. @Pinoy Buzz: watch a local channel here in the Philippines and do not change the channel when his ads are playing. Those things will get into your nerves… or turn you into one of his loyal minions who will sing the song and cause other people to become infected like them.

  9. @onetamad: Oh noes!!! Have you said, “yes” to their question, “isa ka ba sa amin?” (are you one of us?)

  10. On second thought, maybe reposting the image has the unintended consequence of actually promoting the guy. Not really something, I’d like to do. You get paid to do that, you know. And I’m not one to do things for free 😀

    I’ll just point them over here, so they can get the context of the image. Plus, it’s funnier over here anyway.

  11. We must really give it to Villar re what he has done in all aspects of the media. Afterall he prepared for this election. He had all of this planned that he made all that money just to make sure he wins. His motto is “It’s the Presidency or nothing”. Now considering that the elections in our sad country is totally dictated by MONEY, it’s really not surprising if he wins ladies and gentlemen. Noynoy’s group has been trying so hard to raise money through fund raising gigs just to get through. Now I wonder if he had anything to do with the SC ruling out premature campaigning. After all, the one who can shell out the most money can buy a lot of AIRTIME on most of the MAJOR NETWORKS. Think about it guys.

  12. I still say the ads that “have been paid for by friends” came from him. And frankly, it’s a waste of taxpayer’s money.

  13. @Juhn: I don’t know what to really make of your comment. But thanks! :p

    Anyway, apparently this censure was leaked and they’re eyeing someone from the LP party as the culprit. But, regardless of who actually leaked it, what’s done is done.

    To me, this is how the whole scenario will look like. Jamby, for all her intents and purposes will of course be using that against Manny Villar in the hopes of boosting her own bid. But we all know that will never happen. Nevertheless it still is damaging to Villar. Aside from that, the LP and NP will most likely end up throwing shit at each other and will PROBABLY disgust the public more. I also believe that the whole issue will be beneficial to Gordon or Gibo providing they stay quiet since they will be perceived as the “lesser evil”. But between the two, Gibo, to me, is the “lesser-er” evil.

    Then again, this is all just speculation.

    Anyway, let me illustrate to the others what Villar actually does with all of his properties:
    1- Dude buys land;
    2- Dude CREATES a MAJOR THOROUGHFARE zigzagging all of his properties;
    3- Dude puts up subdivisions and shit around THUS propelling the value of his properties UPWARD;
    4- He can either then sell his properties at higher prices thus making lots and lots of cash.

    It’s kind of WAIS if you ask me.
